Last-minute move: getting packing supplies fast

Sometimes a move comes up with days, not weeks, of notice — a new job, a lease that fell through, a closing date that moved. You can still pack well. The key is getting containers in hand immediately and working in a strict order.

Step 1: Get containers today or tomorrow

Your options are the same as any move, just compressed: buy cardboard at a store and assemble it, gather free boxes if you have time to collect them, or have reusable totes dropped off. Next-day drop-off is available across DFW with STORVA; for weekends and the end of the month, book 2–3 days ahead when you can.

Totes skip assembly and taping, which matters when every hour counts. Use the tote calculator to pick a package quickly so you don't run short.

Step 2: Triage before you pack

  • Essentials bag for everyone: clothes, medications, chargers, documents, toiletries.
  • First-night tote: bedding, towels, basic kitchen items, toilet paper, snacks.
  • Then everything else, fastest room first.
  • Anything you're unsure about can be donated or sold later — don't spend time deciding now.

Step 3: Pack fast, not perfectly

  • Pack by room, not by item type, and label only room + priority.
  • Use towels, linens and clothes as padding instead of wrapping every item in paper.
  • Leave drawer contents in light drawers if your helpers can carry them.
  • Bag hardware and tape it to the furniture it came from.
  • Fill containers completely so they stack — half-empty containers waste time and truck space.

Step 4: Recruit help early

Ask friends today, not the day before. Assign one person per room with a clear goal. Short, focused packing sessions beat one exhausting all-nighter.

Step 5: Lock in the move itself

Reserve your truck or movers as soon as you know the date. Check building rules for elevator reservations and loading zones — these can be the hardest thing to get on short notice.

If you run short

Laundry baskets, suitcases, duffels and trash bags (for soft items only) all work in a pinch. If you need more STORVA totes during your rental, call (214) 444-3699.

Keep yourself going

Fast moves are tiring. Set short packing sprints with breaks, eat real meals, and get sleep the night before move day. A rested crew makes fewer mistakes and breaks fewer things than an exhausted one working through the night.

What to skip on a last-minute move

When time is short, skip the tasks that don't affect move day. You don't need to sort every drawer, wrap every item in paper, or clean the new place before you arrive. Pack containers full and move on. Sorting and decluttering can happen after you unpack.

Do not skip the essentials bag, labeling by room, photographing electronics wiring, or keeping documents and medications with you. Those few minutes save hours on the other end.
