End-of-month moving: tips for the busiest days

Many apartment leases start and end on the first of the month, so the last few days of every month are the busiest moving days of the year — trucks, movers, elevators and loading zones all fill up. If your move lands then, a little extra planning keeps it on track.

Book early

  • Reserve your truck or movers as soon as you know your date.
  • Book elevator and loading-dock time at both buildings early — these often go first.
  • Reserve packing equipment early too. With STORVA, book 2–3 days ahead at the end of the month to get your preferred drop-off date.

Ask about overlap

If you can get keys to the new place a day or two early, or keep the old place a day longer, you avoid having to move everything in a single window. Ask both landlords — even a short overlap reduces stress.

Pack ahead

Plan to be fully packed the day before. Elevator reservations are often in fixed time blocks, and you don't want to be packing while your slot runs out. Stage containers near the door, labeled by room.

Plan for crowded buildings

  • Expect other residents moving the same day; be courteous with hallways and elevators.
  • Use dollies to move several containers per trip and shorten your elevator time.
  • Have someone stay with the truck if parking is tight.

Handle move-out on time

  • Check your lease for move-out time and cleaning requirements.
  • Schedule cleaning for the old place (or do it yourself) after the last load.
  • Photograph each room and return keys as instructed.

Utilities and address

Set utility transfers for the actual move date so you aren't without power or internet at the new place. Submit your USPS change of address a couple of weeks ahead.

Pick a pickup date with breathing room

When you rent totes, choose a pickup date that leaves time to unpack after the move — not the same day. If you need longer, call us about extending your rental.

If your dates slip

Leases and closings sometimes shift at the last minute. Keep confirmation numbers for every booking in one place so you can reschedule quickly, and ask providers about their change policies when you book. If you rented totes and need to change your drop-off or pickup date, call (214) 444-3699.

A sample month-end schedule

  • Two weeks before: truck, movers, elevator times and totes booked; utilities scheduled.
  • One week before: most rooms packed; donation drop-off done.
  • Two days before: everything packed except the first-night tote and essentials bags.
  • The day before: furniture disassembled, hardware bagged, containers staged by the door.
  • Move day: load in your reserved window, final walk-through, photos, keys returned.
  • First week after: unpack priority rooms, then the rest; schedule tote pickup with time to spare.
