Where to get moving boxes in Dallas–Fort Worth

Every DFW move starts with the same question: what am I going to put everything in? There are three realistic answers — buy new cardboard, collect free used boxes, or rent reusable plastic totes. Each works. Each has trade-offs. Here is an honest look at all three so you can pick what fits your budget, schedule and home.

Option 1: Buy new cardboard boxes

Home improvement stores, moving-truck rental counters, office supply stores and online retailers all sell new moving boxes in standard sizes. New cardboard is uniform, clean and easy to find on short notice, and you can buy exactly the sizes you want — small boxes for books, mediums for kitchenware, wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes.

The trade-offs: you have to assemble and tape every box, buy tape and markers, and break the boxes down afterward. Mixed sizes don't stack as neatly in a truck, cardboard softens in humidity or rain, and once the move is over you need to recycle or give away the pile. Prices vary by store and change often, so check current prices before you shop.

Option 2: Collect free boxes

Free boxes are the cheapest route in dollars. Neighborhood groups, online marketplaces, friends who just moved, and stores that receive shipments are all common sources. If you have time and a car with space, you can usually gather enough for a small move.

The hidden cost is time and consistency. Used boxes come in random sizes, may be weakened from a previous move, and sometimes carry dust, odors or pests from where they sat. Produce boxes often have hand holes or open tops. Plan for extra trips, extra tape, and a few boxes that won't survive move day. Inspect each box and skip any that are damp or crushed.

Option 3: Rent reusable plastic totes

Plastic tote rental replaces cardboard with sturdy, lidded bins that arrive ready to use. There's nothing to assemble or tape, every tote is the same size so they stack cleanly on a dolly and in a truck, and the lids keep dust and light rain out. When you're finished unpacking, the empties go back — no breakdown, no recycling run.

The trade-offs: rental has a set time window, so you need to finish unpacking before pickup (or extend), and you'll still want a few specialty items like a mattress bag. Totes are a fixed size, so very large or flat items — mirrors, art, lamps — still need their own wrapping.

How to choose

  • Tight budget, flexible time: free boxes, supplemented with a few new ones for heavy items.
  • Need specific sizes or wardrobe boxes: buy new cardboard for those pieces.
  • Short on time, multiple flights of stairs, or worried about weather: reusable totes save assembly time and stack more safely.
  • Moving within DFW and want nothing to throw away afterward: tote rental with drop-off and pickup.
  • Mixing approaches is fine — many people rent totes for most rooms and buy a couple of specialty boxes.

How many do you need?

Box counts depend more on how much you own than on square footage. A kitchen and a bookshelf can use more containers than a bedroom. Use our tote calculator to get a starting count by room, then add a few for the items you always forget — bathroom cabinets, the hall closet and the garage shelf.
